NAID-ANZ STUDY REVEALS 11% OF SYDNEY  PUBLIC TRASH BINS FOUND TO CONTAIN CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION

STUDY EXPOSES THE NEED FOR BUSINESSES TO
SECURELY DESTROY CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION

In a survey of commercial trash bins in the Sydney metropolitan area, 11 percent contained personal confidential information readily accessible to passersby and identity thieves. Of the more than 80 businesses surveyed, primarily bank branches and lawyers’ and doctors’ offices had confidential information in their trash bins.

The investigation, commissioned by the National Association for Information Destruction-ANZ (NAID-ANZ), took place in January and February 2013. A licensed private investigator casually examined the contents of publicly accessible trash bins used by businesses with an established responsibility to protect client data. According to the NAID-ANZ spokesperson, the study was designed to discover the relative percentage of confidential trash that might be available on any given day at a cross section of data-sensitive organisations.

Understanding how to properly dispose and destroy confidential data is critical for any business regardless of industry. Recall offers custom-tailored document disposal solutions for organisations. Secure document disposal with Recall is done to the highest standards to meet industry-specific requirements for compliance and confidentiality. Recall incorporates the same standards used by government organisations and the military worldwide to ensure that information is completely inaccessible, and the documents are destroyed in an environmentally sustainable manner.
